They were not built to be waterproof by modern standards, and they leak through the mortar joints between stones when the surrounding clay soil is saturated. The right approach is almost always interior drainage paired with a wall drainage membrane. Here is why the alternatives do not fit: you cannot meaningfully crack-inject a stone wall because there is no monolithic concrete to inject, and sealing hundreds of individual mortar joints to a watertight tolerance from inside is impractical and does not relieve the hydrostatic pressure anyway. Exterior excavation around an old rubble-stone foundation is risky because these walls rely on the surrounding soil for lateral support, and digging alongside them can destabilize the wall, so it is reserved for cases that genuinely require it and done with appropriate care and engineering input. The interior system handles it elegantly: a dimpled drainage membrane runs up the inside of the stone wall, catching whatever weeps through the joints and directing it down behind the membrane into the perimeter drain tile, which carries it to the sump. The basement face of the wall stays dry, the seepage is managed rather than fought, and the stone is left structurally undisturbed. This configuration goes in constantly across Cincinnati's historic neighborhoods and carries the same written warranty as any other interior system.
